In Vitro Fertilization

What is our objective?

The objective of this treatment is to obtain an adequate quantity of eggs after controlled stimulation of the ovaries, afterwards the eggs will be fertilized in an Assisted Reproduction laboratory with the male partner’s sperm under advanced technology and highly trained personnel, increasing the possibility of a pregnancy.

This method is recommended in the following cases:

  •  Women over 36 years of age.
  •  Failure in artificial inseminations.
  •  Blocked tubes.
  •  Endometriosis.
  •  Ovarian cancer.
  •  Vasectomy.
  •  Severe seminal alteration.
  •  Absence of sperm in the semen.

In Vitro Fertilization summarized
in the following steps:

1.-Ovarian stimulation

Which begins on the second day of menstruation with injectable hormonal medications (Gonadotropins) for about 10 days at doses calculated according to your weight, height and follicular endowment, to achieve multiple ovulations (about 6 to 10 follicles). Throughout this process, the woman is likely to experience tension, stress, and anguish.

2.- Follicle monitoring and serum estradiol

After two days of application of the indicated medicine, the woman is taken a blood test to measure her levels of Estradiol (female hormone) and determine if she should continue with the same dose, increase or decrease it. At this time an ultrasound is not performed because there are no significant changes in the ovaries.
Several ultrasounds and blood draws are performed on alternate days, at the discretion of your doctor, until follicular maturation and adequate blood levels of Estradiol are reached.

3.- Ovular capture

The egg maturation ends with a final injection, which favors the process of ovulation, also known as “shot.” Egg retrieval is scheduled 36 hours after application of such injection. On the day of egg retrieval the woman must go to the center with at least 8 hours of fasting, no makeup, perfume, antiperspirant or any other substance that emits odors. Upon arrival the woman receives a relaxing massage for approximately 20 minutes, so that she can be more relaxed. Before starting the procedure, an arm vein is channeled with a solution and is prepared for a short and shallow anesthesia to capture the eggs. The ovular capture is the process by which eggs are removed from the body. It lasts 15-20 minutes. The doctor, guided by ultrasound, uses a thin needle which crosses the wall of the vagina into the ovary. In each ovary the follicles content is sucked thereby obtaining eggs. This procedure is performed in the operating room.

4.- In Vitro Fertilization

While the eggs are captured, the couple gets a semen sample by masturbation. In the IVF laboratory proceeds to make fertilization which can be of two forms: a) Conventional: the previously prepared eggs and sperm are placed in a glass container for fertilization to occur. B) ICSI (Micro intracytoplasmic injection): This technique involves injecting sperm into the egg using a micro needle, to facilitate fertilization. It is used when the number of mobile and normal sperm is too low to ensure fertilization. Once this occurs, the development of embryos is observed. The couple can check daily the state and development of embryos.

5.- Embryo Transfer

Embryo transfer consists in depositing one or two embryos into the woman’s uterus through the vagina by a thin cannula. This procedure usually occurs 3 to 6 days after egg retrieval, according to the developing embryos. It is important that no chemical substance that releases odors or that can harm embryos such as makeup or antiperspirant is applied. This process does not require anesthesia and takes about 20 minutes.

6.- Pregnancy Test

It is performed 12 days after the embryo transfer by means of a quantitative determination of the pregnancy hormone.
